A rack and pinion is a type of linear actuator that comprises a pair of gears which convert rotational motion into linear motion. This mixture of Rack gears and Spur gears are generally called “Rack and Pinion”. Rack and pinion combinations are often used within a simple linear actuator, where in fact the rotation of a shaft powered yourself or by a motor is converted to linear motion.

Timing belts for linear actuators are typically made of polyurethane reinforced with internal steel or Kevlar cords. The most typical tooth geometry for belts in linear actuators is the AT profile, which includes a huge tooth width that delivers high level of resistance against shear forces. On the powered end of the actuator (where the engine is usually attached) a precision-machined toothed pulley engages with the belt, while on the non-driven end, a set pulley simply provides assistance. The non-driven, or idler, pulley is definitely often used for tensioning the belt, even though some styles offer tensioning mechanisms on the carriage. The kind of belt, tooth profile, and applied tension pressure all determine the force which can be transmitted.
